Not gonna lie I am kinda disappointed that this was only 6 episodes but I guess I should be happy that I am able to see it animated.

Anyway This series brings one overarching question: What in the hell happened to Mary so that She ended up the way She was when Yumeko arrived ? In this series She seems more like the post character development Mary She turned into after losing Yumeko despite this being the past. While watching Kakegurui you obviously think that Mary was probably always a bad(ish) person who reformed thanks to Yumeko but this series comes out and shows that She used to be a lot more like her reformed self in the past so what happened that She changed to the point of using Ryota as a chair when Yumeko arrived ?

And Despite Tsuzura claiming in this episode that She will be with Mary no matter what happens She is literally NOWHERE to be seen in the Kakegurui anime as well so that is probably related to Mary’s change of personality ALSO If anyone rewatches Kakegurui, the first season episode 7 last minutes has Mary holding Tsuzura’s hairpin in her hands which proves that something must have happened

There were 2 Kakegurui manga I think. The main hadn‘t mentioned this Mary‘s change yet & the spin off… Well, I think this is the spin-off animated :/

In this sort of environment it shouldn't be unexpected for someone's personality to become more perverse, however, next to the glorious freakshow we all know and love that is Jabami Yumeko almost perversions pale in comparison lol. That said, I'm sure you're right about something going down with Hanatemari being the catalyst for the shift in her mental to the point that we saw in the start of the first season.

Like this prequel contradicts what we seen and know of Mary in the main series, NTM the actions she'd take on. Like you're telling me she couldn't have used her past experience and maybe give Yumeko some advice or something? C'mon....
It'd be one thing if this were a what if scenario, and said what if scenario is a retelling of Kakegurui S1, just with Mary as the MC, but it's not. Another thing that bothered me is Tsuzura. First off, her relationship with Mary is nonexistent. Secondly, she adds nothing to the story, she is basically the female equivalent of Suzui, much like how Lefiya in Danmachi Sword Oratoria is a female Bell. Third, looking at the female cast in Kakegurui, I find it hard to believe someone as pure and sweet as Tsuzura would exist, not without some skeletons in her closet.

What I find puzzling is this is directed by Yuuichirou Hayashi, who directed the first two seasons of Kakegurui, as well as Dorohedoro and Part 2 of the final season of AOT. Kakegurui S2 might be considered a disappointment, but at least he managed to retain what everyone liked about first season. What the **** is this? What happened my guy?

Sooo, what would have happened if Mary didn't catch the fact that they were more chests ? What was the point of the last game ? Sure it's Sakura fault to not have thinking about the possibility that the treasure hunt was still going on but come on, If you set up a game where she can't be at two places at one time while her opponent cannot, it's just not fair at all. It was fair to add them in the group coz of the fact that Sakura did know about the layout of the building but didn't they think that it was not fair at all to continue the treasure hunt while gambling ?

Lol is it me or it's the first time we saw a not sore loser except Yumeko in the whole show ? I mean I was impressed to how Sakura took it lol. But ngl I chuckled a bit when she was still asking Mary to join her... I was like "wdym, don't you remember your bet ? lmao". Sure it was harsh how Aoi treated her and I hope she calls off the wedding somehow but that bit with Mary was a bit funny.

Overall, I liked it. sure I still hate the fact that author-kun adds someone as plain as Tsuzura or Suzui in a cast full of crazy people, even more when she starts crying for everything but yeah it was practically the same experience with the main story... I just skip each scene involving these characters lol.

The ED is good, I like the visuals but not really fan of the voices, the OP well ok and the Ahegao faces, well not as crazy and various as in the main story but ok.

Aaaaand I wanna be Sachiko's pet. It will be a 7/10 for me. I have my fun.

I really like Sakura she´s sweet and i have always hated how Aoi treated her im glad that Mary told him off. The manga is exciting to read as well really Sakura and Mary even become much better friends and there is quiet the yuri subtext there. it was a great watch though but i prefer the manga

well the manga did not get there yet so as for now they are still a "couple" :)

Mary Saotome... Ranma's long lost sister...

After 5 years since S1 of Kakegurui and over 3 years since Kakegurui S2, MAPPA brings us back into the world of Kakegurui once again with Kakegurui Twin! MAPPA is the studio behind Zombieland Saga, the final season of AOT, God of Highschool, Banana Fish, Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuri on Ice, Dance Dance Danseur, and more, including the highly anticipated upcoming Chainsaw Man! Looking at the plot, it's basically a prequel focused on Mary set a year before the events of the main show. Looking at this, it looks like it could be a fun experience, maybe it'll elevate Kakegurui as a whole, maybe we'll see more depth added to Mary. Well....it's a mixed bag.

At best, the plot is basically a retelling of the events of Kakegurui S1 if Mary were the MC, and at worst, given what we know of Mary in the main series, and the fact this is a prequel, it contradicts what we know of Saotome, and unless you read the manga, you're likely left with questions. NTM it's pretty rushed, AND it has 6 episodes. As far as characters go, outside those we already know, like Mary, Midari, and Kirari to name a few, all of the new characters are boring. Tsuzura adds nothing to the story, and her relationship with Mary is about as existent as Shikimori and Izumi's. NTM she's basically a female Suzui. Y'know, Suzui, the guy accompanying Yumeko? Heck, Tsuzura hardly fits into the show just from her personality alone. Sachiko is a Kirari Momobami wannabe, Yukimi is just there, she'd be better off in Hyouka since she loves books so much, Mikura exists for conflict, and Aoi has motivations that are only described as unclear.

Part of what makes Kakegurui a standout among MAPPA's catalog is the insane vibe it's known for, the visuals, everything you love about it ain't here. There ARE some positives. The ED Queen's Bluff by Iris is easily one of the best parts of the show. MAPPA killed it with the visuals. And the cartoony style at the beginning of episode 1 was nice.
Overall, it's not the worst show, but it IS a disappointment. There's actually a good story here, but the execution ain't it. It'd be fine if it was the same show, just not related to Kakegurui, know what I mean? At any rate, unless you're a fan of MAPPA or you're a fan of Kakegurui, you're better off skipping this and just head straight to Kakegurui S1. Unless you like cute girls gambling with a side of yuri.
Final Verdict: 5/10
